Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) is one of the key elements of the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) process used by most medium and heavy-duty engine builders to meet EPA 2010 regulations. DEF is a non-toxic, stable, colorless, odorless solution of 67.5% purified water and 32.5% ultra pure automotive grade UREA. DEF is sprayed into the exhaust stream where it reacts with the NOx in the SCR system to form nitrogen and water. DEF should not be added to the fuel tank, there is instead, a separate tank for DEF on SCR equipped vehicles.

UREA is a central compound in diesel engine technology designed to meet the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) 2009 and 2010 NOx reduction mandates for the heavy duty and light duty segments.

SCR uses DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) to reduce NOx (Nitrogen Oxide). Small quantities of diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) are injected into the exhaust upstream of a catalyst, where it vaporizes and decomposes to form nitrogen and water vapor. Nitrogen makes up about 78% of the air we breathe every day.

No, DEF is classified as – Nonhazardous, Nontoxic and Nonflammable.

DEF weighs about 9 lbs. per gallon.

DEF should be stored out of direct sunlight, in a well-ventilated area, cool, dry. Although the optimum storage temperature is up to 77°F (25°C), temporary exposure to higher temperatures has little to no impact on the quality of DEF.

The shelf life of DEF is directly related to the ambient storage temperature. DEF will degrade over time depending on temperature and exposure to sun light. When stored between 10 and 90°F, shelf life will easily be one year. If the maximum temperature does not exceed approximately 75°F for an extended period of time, the shelf life will be two years. BENECOR offers Bulk Dispensing Systems and Tote / IBC Systems with climate control.

DEF Consumption Is Approximately 2 To 3% Of The Diesel Fuel Consumed.

The equipment used to handling and dispensing DEF must be compatible with ISO 22241-3 specifications. Rest assured, all BENECOR products comply with ISO 22241-3 specifications.
